Washdown Scales and Balances
At Summit Measurement we offer a variety of washdown scales. Washdown scales are built to withstand specific environments, such as moisture and dust. They are designed to resist liquids and particles such as dust to varying degrees. They are not called waterproof scales because different scales offer different degrees of water resistance, and some are more waterproof than others. Our washdown scales are resistant to dust, and offer different degrees of moisture protection, ranging from IP65 to IP68.
What does this mean? IP refers to Ingress Protection, which indicates how well an enclosure is protected from penetration by contaminants such as dust and water. The IP Ratings Guide CLICK HERE summarizes the degrees of protection from solids and water in each category. Most of our washdown scales offer protection ratings varying from IP65 to IP68. As you can see on the chart, scales rated IP65 are protected from limited exposure to jets of water, IP66 rating offers increased protection from water projected in powerful jets (such as hosing off) while IP67 rating protects against brief immersion in water and scales rated IP68 can be immersed in water under pressure for extended periods of time, and can be cleaned with pressure washing, steam cleaning or chemical cleanup. When choosing your scale it is important to take into account how much protection is needed to resist liquids and particles from entering the internal components of the scale, and whether frequent washing will be required for your application. Some scales, even if they are stainless steel, may not have a sealed load cell and so might not have adequate moisture resistance for your application. Look at the IP rating to be sure you have the right scale for your needs.
