Legal for Trade Scales and Balances: In the United States, scales and balances used in selling, purchasing or exchanging goods based on weight are required to be approved by the NTEP (National Type Evaluation Program) system. This means that the scale has to have a C.O.C. (Certificate of Conformance) number. This number proves that the scale type has been tested and the National Conference on Weights and Measures affirms that the scale is capable of giving an accurate weight over time and in varying temperatures. NTEP Scales are usually approved to a certain degree of accuracy and accuracy class. Typically scales are NTEP approved to a readability one-tenth the readability of the scale. A milligram balance, with accuracy of 0.001 g is typically NTEP approved to 0.01 grams. Some states require that the accuracy and NTEP approved accuracy are the same. (Look for scales where "d" = "e"). Click this link to learn more about "d" = "e'.
Every state has different requirements for medical and recreational dispensaries and for cannabis cultivation and production. It is important to contact your state or local weights and measures department to learn what degree and class of accuracy you are required to have for your industry. This is essential to finding the scales and balances that are legal in your state. Many manufacturers cannot accept returns if the scales contain even a trace of marijuana, so it is important to be sure you are ordering the scale that meets your needs.
