SUMMIT MEASUREMENT BENCH SCALES - SIMPLIFIED
As with any scale, the most important factors are the capacity and readability. Capacity refers to the amount of material you want to weigh. A scale with capacity of 150 pounds can weigh up to 150 pounds, while a scale with a capacity of 300 pounds can weigh up to 300 pounds of material. You should also be realistic and use common sense in choosing a capacity. Most laundromats, for example will not choose a laundry scale with capacity of 300 pounds because they know they probably cannot fit 300 pounds of laundry on the scale at one time. Readability refers to the accuracy of the scale. A scale with readability of 1 pound is accurate to 1 pound, while a scale with accuracy of .001 pound is accurate to the nearest .001 of a pound. The degree of accuracy needed depends on your application - what you are going to use the scale for, and how detailed the readings need to be. As a general rule, it is recommended to order one level down - if you need a scale to be accurate to 1 pound you should order a scale accurate to 0.1 pound so you can round up or down to the correct number. Scales with greater accuracy are generally more expensive.
Platform size refers to the measurements of the weighing surface. You can easily look at the platform measurements and the material you intend to weigh to estimate the size you need.
Some of the features you can find on bench scales are RS232, NTEP and Washdown. RS232 refers to the ability to connect the scale to a computer to read or print out data. NTEP means the scale is approved for over the counter sales. If you are using the scale in a retail setting, such as a farmers market or laundromat or any situation where your sales are based on weight, you are required by law to have an NTEP approved (or Legal for Trade) scale. This means the scale has been approved by the National Type Evaluation Program, and all of our scales that have the NTEP label on our website will meet this qualification. You can find all of our Legal for Trade Bench scales at the link below:
Washdown refers to a scale that has been sealed so that it can get wet. At Summit Measurement, we offer a multitude of different washdown scales which you can find at the link below.
